Registering Domain Names

Registering Domain Names

Registering a domain name in itself is simple. Knowing what to do after that to make it work as a web site or email address is another thing entirely, though like all things can be learned easily enough.

The first thing we do when we register a domain name is head to our registrar website at mydomains.net.au and create you an account. We register the domain name in your name and once it is registered we then log into the domain management portal and point your domain to the hosting server(s).

You can do this step yourself.

When you register a domain name you are simply buying a name. You will still need some type of hosting if you want to use it for emails and/or a website and you will need to set the DNS to point to your hosting server.

Registering a domain name means you are reserving the sole use of a particular name for your own uses for a certain amount of time. The maximum time for .au domains is 2 years. There is no limit to the number of years you can register a .com domain name.

Once you register your domain name you will need to keep your email up to date as you will be notified about 3 months before the renewal is due and again repeatedly weekly until you either renew the domain or it expires.
